Into the Ears of Babes

A picto-memoir of sorts. This slim, colorful, unique and poignant art book of 20 mixed media collages examine the familial and societal scripts of a large Irish RC family in the 70’s and 80’s from the perspective of the baby….until she wasn’t.

If you know what an Irish twin is or want to know!

If you have siblings you helped 'mother'

If you gave up candy for Lent and did penance.

If you grew up in the 70's - before seatbelts and helicopter parents.

If you were told to 'go out and play' and to 'toughen up!'

“ Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop. “

about the author

Jessica Rechner is a visual artist and vocalist. She is a daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend. She sings classical, some jazz and a little pop. Her mixed media art examines, considers and challenges concepts of body, autonomy, emotionality, family, memory and belonging. Jessica is one of seven children, grew up on Long Island and has lived in Queens, NY for the past 25 years. Married 30 years to Bill, they have two grown children, Cecilia and Claudia. As founder of the ‘Creative Expression with Scripture’ art group, Jessica fosters an atmosphere of prayerful exploration of the life interior and facilitates an artistic response with various materials. When she is not creating or singing, Jessica works at a large non-denominational, multi-racial church in Elmhurst, Queens as their Sunday Service Coordinator. Jessica’s favorite place to be is at the beach: salt + sand + sea = JOY

Each collage is hand drawn, hand painted, hand cut from various source materials and hand glued. Jessica is working on two other series: Empty Nest and She Sings! Jessica’s work has been shown with LIC-Artists at The Factory and at Culture Lab LIC.

At the Gallery!
I was honored to be invited to show two of my pieces: Do You See What I See? and Look Closely at the NOMADS show located at the Diego Salazar Art Studio in Long Island City, NY. Presented by the LIC-ARTIST Collective, the 5 day Festival opened with a Kickoff Party at FluxIV with art, music and dance. Located next to the water in Hunts Point, the indoor-outdoor space was electric with excitement for the Festival! The enthusiasm and interest continued throughout the weekend. With map in hand and a hunger to see what various galleries and studios had to offer I tried to see as much as I could between the NOMADS opening reception and gallery sitting on Sunday. Visiting artists in their work studios we talk about inspiration, process, materials and challenges. For many of us it is a peek into another world we rarely get to see.
On opening night of NOMADS, Patrice Bowman, filmmaker and friend, was kind enough to come film and photograph the night. She loved my piece Look Closely so much she bought it on the spot! Being in a group show, there were about 15 artists represented in our space at the Diego Salazar Studio. There was a solo show down the hall and Open Studios throughout the building giving those who attended much to look at. Donna and Ben from the Forest Hills Choir stopped by to take it all in. Thankful that my husband Bill was there to support and enjoy. It was wonderful to interact with the different artists, look at their work and be able to share mine!
I’m looking forward to continuing being a part of the LIC-ARTIST Collective and participating in all they have to offer the Queens, NY art community
